Objectives of the Club
July 6, 2010
To promote support and encourage the following:
- Yachting, boating, navigation and seamanship
- Excellence and sportsmanship in competitive sailing, powerboats, junior sailing, hobie cats, game fishing, rowing and surfing.
- The Provision of facilities for the use and benefit of all our members.
- Social and cultural activities.
The club in recent year’s have grown not only in it’s membership but also in the provision of various mooring facilities to cater for the ever increasing registered vessels to the RSYC. This has made us seriously look into looking at ways of facilitating the numbers in membership and not being able to provide mooring spaces for all interested registered vessels.
The Committee is currently looking into the viability of expanding the Club keeping in mind its rich historical architecture. We have enlisted the help of Mr. Jerry Standan, an accomplished architect from England, to draw up a draught with visions of what the club should look like with the intention of expanding to a second floor.
All financial prospective transactions/loans and commitments will be tabled at the 2007 AGM.
Moorings
This has been an on going project of the club in trying to achieve and increase the much needed mooring spaces for members who own vessels registered to the club who wish to have moored at the club.
As this can be an expensive project, we have been able to, through the help of members, move and improve this area, but unfortunately not as fast as we would have liked to.
Sporting Activities
Junior Sailing has been a very busy sport for the junior members of the club under the guidance of Mr. Robert Phillips. This activity is run on Saturdays from 1300 hours to 1500 hours and have very well established junior sailors within the club
All round it is rewarding to see how the sporting activities within the club has grown with enthusiasm and stiff competitions within the various sports.
Early mornings and late afternoons any day of the week you see paddlers leaving the club for training or competing in national competitions. The club is proud that the noteriety of the members that represent Fiji and the club internationally have come back home successful in their endeavors to achieve the best in the world.
B’Class Sailing have their competitions on Sundays and note the increase and enthusiasm in members which is run under their President, Nick Rollings. Don’t be fooled by their friendly banter as these sailors are very serious and are very competitive in this sport. If you are interested in sailing and don’t have a sailing vessel they are accommodating especially if you are novice, new in the country or an experience sailor without the use of a sailing vessel.
Hobie Cat Sailing have seen members represent the club and country nationally and internationally under the guidance of veteran Graham Southwick. As a regular weekender to “Sand Bank” I regular witness these competitiors within the Laucala Bay basin skilfully menouver their vessels to “Sand Bank”, outside the reef and back.
The World Hobie Cat Sailing competitions will be held in 2007, either in Suva or Pacific Harbour and with international and national experience under their belt, the Fiji Hobie Cat teams are to look out for competitively.
We have seen and also been involved with the RSYC registered International Game Fishing Association throughout the years, and have seen it involve and grow with renewed interest within the club.
Under the guidance of President, Sam Vellenoweth and his committee they have been very innovative especially in the Junior category and the beaming smiles from the winning recipients are worthy of their competitions. Mind you this also includes the Ladies, Men and Open Competitions.
It is good to see Power Boat supporting sailing in their role as duty/rescue boats in the various categories. There is one major power boat competition in the year which is the tradional RSYC Fiji Day Boat Race which has carried on from the RSYC Suva to Levuka Launch Race. This is a launch race for charity and it is good to see through out the year’s the involvement of Laser Sailing, B’Class Sailing, RSYC IGFA and Paddlers get involved and compete.
Through this race we have been able to make a little difference in the lives of the less fortunate like orphanges St Christopher’s Home and Dilkusha Home, The Fiji Blind Society, Samabula Old Peoples Home, Father Law Home, Homes of Hope, 152 Hart Homes, Retired Sisters of Nazerath.
The club members in all aspects of the club including junior members get together in support of this race with big open hearts and THANK them whole heartedly.
